Current Philosophy: Wright Goes Beyond Outdated Philosophy

Virginia's range of motion is 130°, and the medial-pivot implant feels like her original knee. She now has her life back and no longer lets the pain dictate what she can and cannot do.
Most total knee implants on the market are based on an outdated philosophy of knee anatomy and knee motion. This philosophy is grounded on the idea that the knee functions basically like a hinge, that both condyles "roll-back" the same way as the knee flexes. Another aspect of the philosophy is that the condyles are in the shape of the letter "J". Total knee implants designed on this philosophy have J-curved femoral components in an attempt to re-create roll-back.
Although this philosophy has been generally accepted for the past 40 years, recent studies have shown that its assumptions aren't true. The knee is not restricted to hinge-like movement. The condyles, which are actually circular, do not roll back at the same time.
With this in mind, Wright designed the ADVANCE® Medial-Pivot Knee System to replicate this motion. The ADVANCE® Medial-Pivot Knee features a medial conformity that controls the motion of the medial femoral compartment, effectively reproducing the medial pivoting motion of a normal knee. This increased movement, bending, and flexibility feel more like a normal knee joint.
