The PROFEMUR® R Revision Prosthesis has been designed for the replacement of
loose femoral prosthetic components that often cause osteolysis in the
proximal portion of the femur.
The prosthesis is modular and cementless.
The current PROFEMUR® R prosthetic design follows a considerable period of
laboratory testing and clinical trials which commenced in 1990 in German
and Italian hospitals specializing in hip revision surgery. The initial
requirement was that the system must allow the surgeon to adapt
pre-operatively to a diverse range of surgical problems following removal
of both cemented and cementless implants, as well as, offering a viable
solution to difficult primary indications. Therefore, it was necessary to
provide a system that offered flexibility of design, without compromising
the intrinsic characteristics of a successful prosthetic hip joint.
The PROFEMUR® R is a modular prosthesis comprised of four principal parts:
- Distal stem with cutting flanges for the diaphyseal fixation
- Proximal component for support in the metaphyseal region
- Modular neck
- Head
